Black/African Psychology, in very broad terms, deals with the question of what a psychology for us and by us would look like. While many of us are trained in “traditional” theories and models, those Eurocentric models often fall short in describing the Black experience. Consequently, they fail at helping Black people.
We who are dedicated to the wellness of our people must take up the mantle of learning and applying the wisdom and traditions of Black folks from our authentic perspective.

Dr. Donell Barnett is a licensed counseling psychologist currently serving as a Senior Administrator of behavioral health programs. His expertise and interests include trauma, the role of faith in wellness, and programs to improve the health and well-being of communities left out of economic and social growth. Throughout his career, he has served as a staff psychologist, researcher, consultant, adjunct professor, and administrator in a range of organizations, including the US Army Public Health Center and City Colleges of Chicago, to name a few. A former US Army Psychologist, he is the proud recipient of several awards, campaign medals, and recognitions. Additionally, he has the esteemed honor of having served as the 47th President of the Association of Black Psychologists, Inc.
