Talking with students is always a great joy. I had a chance to meet with a bright group of students and talking them about establishing new patterns that would shape not only them, but generations beyond them. 

The principle of Sankofa teaches us that we have to understand our history, our story, the legacy of those that have gone before us to really move forward with power and purpose. 

I introduced them to some scholars and thinkers who poured out of themselves to help us know that 1619 is not the start of our history. We are the descendants of the oldest cultures and civilizations on earth. And in knowing that, we can frame our present and prepare for our future. 

Contrary to a popular belief, We didn’t start from the bottom and now were here…we were always on top…and Sankofa helps to know that and live it out in our lives.
